Vitamin E intake can be related to polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) intake. The Safe Intake for Vitamin E in the Dietary Reference Values section of Balanced Diet shows 3 mg/day for women and 4 mg/day for men. These are the correct figures set by the Panel on DRVs and should be both safe and adequate for adults consuming the amounts of PUFA recommended. In a normal American diet the ratio 0.4 mg/g PUFA appears to be satisfactory and the Panel recommended this for infant formulas. However, since Food Analysis is comparing what has been or maybe eaten, and actual PUFA intake will probably not be the recommended amount, the safe intake is being calculated using this ratio and so changes accordingly. Based on recommended PUFA intake, and using the average weight and physical levels for men and women aged 19 to 50 this results to about 7 mg/day and 5 mg/day respectively. |
